How telepsychiatry works

Telepsychiatry is psychiatric care delivered through secure video. For most visits, it works much like an in-person appointment. You can join from your home or another private, convenient location while you are physically in Missouri.

We use a secure telehealth platform designed for healthcare visits. Our office will provide joining instructions before your appointment.

What it's good for

  • Medication management visits (most follow-ups)
  • Supportive psychotherapy follow-ups
  • Initial psychiatric evaluations (for most patients)
  • Quick check-ins when something has shifted between visits
  • Patients who travel, have childcare constraints, or live outside the Columbia area
Tech requirements

What you need on your end

The technical requirements are minimal - if you can stream a video, you can do a telepsychiatry visit.

Device

Phone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone.

Internet

A reliable connection - most home Wi-Fi works fine.

Private space

A room where you can talk freely for the duration of the visit. Headphones recommended.

Our office will provide connection instructions before your visit. If technical problems occur, contact the office for next steps.

State licensure

Dr. Yerrapu is licensed in Missouri. To be seen via telepsychiatry, you must be physically located in the state of Missouri at the time of your visit. This is a legal requirement, not a preference. If you travel out of state, we can keep seeing you - but you would need to be in Missouri for the actual appointment.

Privacy and security

We use a secure video platform intended for healthcare visits. You should still take reasonable steps on your end: use a private space, use headphones if others are nearby, and avoid public Wi-Fi for visits.

Like all healthcare, telepsychiatry has some inherent limits: if you're in crisis and unreachable, we can't be there. If that ever happens, please call 988, 911, or go to your nearest emergency room.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about telepsychiatry

Is telepsychiatry appropriate for every visit?

Many psychiatric follow-ups and supportive psychotherapy visits can be completed by secure video. Some situations require an in-person evaluation; the clinician will discuss that with you when needed.

Can I switch between in-person and telehealth?

Yes, often. Many patients do a mix: in-person for the first visit, then telehealth for most follow-ups; or in-person during a difficult stretch, then back to telehealth. We're flexible.

What if I have technical problems during a session?

We'll switch to phone. If we can't reconnect within a few minutes, we'll reschedule the video portion. You won't be charged for sessions that fail due to technical issues on our end.

Do you see patients outside Missouri?

Not via telehealth. We are licensed in Missouri only, which means at the time of your visit you must be physically in Missouri. If you're in another state and need a referral, we're happy to help you find someone.

Is telepsychiatry covered by insurance?

Coverage varies by insurance plan. Contact your insurer to confirm telehealth benefits, and see the insurance page for the plans we accept.
