What medication management is

Medication management is the ongoing psychiatric care of evaluating whether medication is appropriate, choosing the right one, starting it carefully, adjusting as needed, and following up to make sure it's working - without side effects you can't live with.

It is not a quick prescription. The first visit is a full psychiatric evaluation: history, symptoms, prior medications and responses, family history, medical context, and your goals. Decisions are made together, in plain language, with time for your questions.

Who it helps

Medication can be a useful part of treatment for many conditions, including:

  • Depression and treatment-resistant depression
  • Anxiety, panic, and generalized anxiety
  • ADHD across the lifespan
  • Bipolar disorder
  • OCD (typically SSRIs)
  • PTSD (often in combination with therapy)
  • Schizophrenia and psychotic disorders
  • Sleep difficulties related to mood or anxiety
How it works

From evaluation to ongoing care

  1. 01

    First visit (approximately 60 min)

A full psychiatric evaluation: what's been going on, when it started, what makes it better or worse, what you've tried, and what you hope will be different. Medical and family history reviewed. Recommendations discussed in plain language.

  2. 02

    Starting & adjusting

If medication is recommended, we'll discuss options, expected benefits, common side effects, and how we'll know if it's working. You leave with a clear plan and a follow-up scheduled.

  3. 03

    Ongoing follow-up

Follow-up visits are approximately 15–30 minutes and focus on response, side effects, treatment goals, and next steps. Medication refills are managed during scheduled follow-up appointments.

Protocols

Controlled substances & what we don't do

Yes, when appropriate

Controlled substances

Yes, we prescribe stimulants for ADHD and benzodiazepines for anxiety when clinically appropriate. We follow established protocols: clear diagnosis, regular follow-up, random urine drug screens when indicated, and state PDMP checks. We do not prescribe controlled substances on a first visit without an established diagnosis.

Refill requests

Medication refills are managed during scheduled follow-up appointments, either in person or by telehealth. Schedule follow-up visits in advance to help prevent gaps in medication.

What we don't do

We do not prescribe medical marijuana, opioids for chronic pain, court-ordered evaluations, disability evaluations, or independent medical exams.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about medication

Will I have to take medication forever?

Not necessarily. Many people take medication for a defined period - for example, an antidepressant for 6–12 months after symptoms resolve. Others stay on medication long-term because the underlying condition warrants it. We'll discuss the right length of treatment for you specifically.

What if I've had bad reactions to medications before?

That's important information, and we'll take it seriously. We'll review what you tried, what happened, and choose differently. There are usually multiple reasonable options for any condition, and prior bad reactions actually help us narrow down faster.

Do you prescribe controlled substances?

Yes, when clinically appropriate. We follow state and federal guidelines, including PDMP checks, regular follow-up visits, and (when indicated) urine drug screening. We do not prescribe on a first visit without an established diagnosis.

Can I do medication management by telehealth?

Yes, for most things. Some situations require in-person evaluation; we'll let you know if that's the case for you. Missouri residents only - see telepsychiatry for details.

Is self-pay available?

Yes. Contact our office for current self-pay information. We also accept many insurance plans; see the insurance page for details.
