Preparing for care
What to expect at a first psychiatric appointment
A first psychiatric appointment is an opportunity to understand your concerns and discuss an appropriate next step. You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis. A clear account of what has changed in daily life is a useful starting point.
The purpose of the evaluation
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who evaluate mental health concerns within the broader context of health. An assessment may explore symptoms, medical conditions, previous treatment, and circumstances affecting well-being. The discussion helps guide recommendations rather than assuming that every concern requires medication.
A useful opening statement describes the main difficulty and its impact. For example, explaining that concentration has changed at work provides more context than naming a condition you suspect. Ask for clarification when a question or recommendation is unfamiliar.
Prepare a short history
Before the visit, organize the details you want to discuss. Notes can help when several concerns overlap. Include what you know, and say when dates or details are uncertain.
- When the main concerns started and how they affect sleep, school, work, or relationships.
- Previous mental health care, including what was helpful and what was difficult.
- Current prescription medicines, nonprescription products, vitamins, and supplements.
- Relevant health conditions, allergies, and family mental health history.
Questions to bring
Write down the questions that matter most to you. A treatment conversation should leave room for your preferences and practical circumstances.
- What are you considering, and is more information needed?
- What options could address the concerns we discussed?
- What would we monitor to decide whether a plan is helping?
- How should I contact the office about a concern between appointments?
Confirm practical arrangements
Ask the office about arrival instructions, requested documents, cost information, and whether a support person can attend. If the appointment involves an adolescent, confirm who needs to be present and which consent documents are required. Do not send a detailed medical history through ordinary email.
At Abhaya Behavioral Health, the contact page provides office information and the phone number for appointment requests. Confirm the location and visit format directly with the office.
Leave with a clear next step
Before the appointment ends, summarize your understanding of the recommendations and any follow-up arrangements. Ask what remains uncertain and what you should do if your situation changes. The first appointment begins a care conversation; it does not need to settle every question at once.
